Peter & Joan Wyatt

Rev. Peter Wyatt is associate professor of theology and immediate past principal of Emmanuel College. He teaches in the areas of ecumenism, mission and historical theology. Ordained by Hamilton Conference in 1969, he has served in four conferences of the United Church – Alberta (St. Paul Pastoral Charge), Bay of Quinte (Port Hope), Hamilton (Melrose) and Toronto (Whitevale-Cherrywood and Trinity-St. Paul’s). In the years 1996 to 2001 he served the General Council as General Secretary, Theology, Faith and Ecumenism. In this capacity he was responsible for relations with the Canadian Council of Churches, the World Council of Churches, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches and the Methodist World Council. He served on the writing teams for a number of significant United Church inter-faith theological documents including Mending the World, Bearing Faithful Witness and That We May Know Each Other.

Peter is a graduate of Victoria College, the University of Toronto (B.A.), Union Theological Seminary, New York (M. Div.) and Emmanuel College, the Toronto School of Theology (Th. D.) He is author of a major study in the theology of John Calvin, Jesus Christ and Creation in the Theology of John Calvin, a book of sermons, The Page that Fell out of my Bible and numerous articles both academic and popular. In recent years he played a leading role in tercentenary celebrations marking the of the births of John and Charles Wesley. He is currently chair of the Steering Committee for Rediscovering Calvin: Resources for Renewal, an international conference marking the 500th anniversary of the birth of Calvin, to be held on the University of Toronto campus, June 18-20, 2009.

Peter is married to his high school sweetheart, Joan (nee Parsons), and together they continue to negotiate the path of parenthood with their four adult children.
