The Rev. Joan Wyatt has just retired as Director of Contextual Education at Emmanuel College, Toronto. Prior to coming to Emmanuel Joan served for seven years at the Vancouver School of Theology as Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology and Theological Field Education. She has an upcoming chapter in a book on the history of the UCC focusing on the decade of the 1970s and an article in Touchstone magazine on UCC feminist foremothers. Joan’s interest in transformational leadership in the church drew her to serve as chair of the Redesign Evaluation Task Group of the Executive of the General Council. She is also recently completed directing an evaluative process on the impact of SpiritWorks in Scarborough Presbytery in Toronto.
Joan graduated from Sick Children’s Hospital and worked in nursing and in childbirth education for many years. She returned to school after the birth of four children completing a BA in English literature at Trent University and an MDiv at Emmanuel College. She has completed all but her dissertation for a ThD in Pastoral Theology from the Toronto School of Theology. Joan was ordained by Bay of Quinte Conference in 1986 and served in ministry at Trinity United Church, Beamsville and then for nine years at Trinity St. Paul’s in Toronto. Joan’s interests have always included creative liturgy, preaching and the integration of the arts in worship.
Joan is married to her high-school sweetheart, Peter immediate past Principal of Emmanuel College and an ordained minister in the UCC. Together they continue to negotiate the path of partnership and parenthood of four grown children.
