2010 > Bible Study and Theology for Today

Tom Sherwood

Tom Sherwood

Tom has carried out two professional careers the past 25 years, establishing a large suburban New Church Development congregation from 1984 to 1999 (Orléans United Church in Ottawa Presbytery) and serving Carleton University Ecumenical Chaplain from 1999 to 2009, the only full-time religious professional for a population of 20,000 students. All the while, he has also been an Adjunct Professor of Sociology of Religion at Carleton, supervising graduate students and teaching part-time. In 2009, the United Church commissioned him to undertake a 3-year research project as the McGeachy Senior Scholar. The project is called "Listening to the Echo" - a reference to the Echo Generation, a cohort of youth and young adults we sometimes call the Missing Generation. In the Bible Studies and Theology for Today sessions, he will be giving voice to this generation as he has heard it in ministry and teaching. In fact, he suggests that we think of the second morning session this year as "Theology for Tomorrow".

Tom is married to Lorena Duncan, and together they have raised four children, two are now young adults. They bought the former Sunny Brae United Church in Pictou County in 2003, and it has become their family retreat.
